HISTORY OF THE CENTRE

Hannahstown while a total rural area in the early 1900s had a community hall known as "Hammil Hall" which according to official records was burnt in mysterious circumstances on 11 June 1921.

In the 1940s a new parochial hall was built with voluntary labour and second hand materials. During the next 60 years the hall was venue for whist drives, boxing clubs, Irish dancing, drama society and considerable success was enjoyed by the amateur thespians as their production of "Love and Land" toured Northern Ireland.

With the increase in the population of the Hannahstown area it became apparent that the old hall could no longer provide the facilities that were required in the late twentieth century with particular emphasis on new activities and health and safety.

A committee was formed in 1999 with the object of establishing or securing a new Community Centre. This committee embarked on a mammoth task of raising funds for the project. As you will appreciate this was a lengthy process.

The building work commenced in late 2003 and we were delighted that on February 24th, 2005 the Centre was officially opened by Mary McAleese, the President of Ireland.
